Authorship in Television

This week re-watching Breaking Bad’s first season made me really think about how far the show’s come and how much the characters have changed in its 5 seasons so far. Of course, given 5 seasons and the type of writers that Breaking Bad has, it’d be hard not to have character development of some sort but just the magnitude of difference between the characters of season one versus the characters of season five. While it was the goal for Walter White to become the character he is (Vince Gilligan has constantly said that he wanted to transform Mr. Chips to Scarface), the way the transformation occurred is just a testament to the acting abilities of Bryan Cranston and the writing of the Breaking Bad staff. But beyond Walter White, who the show revolves around and essentially had his fate determined for him long before the pilot aired, almost all of the characters are complexly illustrated and change from their original depictions. (Except for you Walter Jr. Never stop loving breakfast).

Breaking Bad has become one of the most critically acclaimed TV shows in recent memory, although I guess the level of hype has led it to disappoint some of my classmates. But to me it’s easy to see why it’s been showered with as many accolades as it has, the directing and cinematography are top notch, the acting is crazy good, and the plot moves forward smoothly. All of this created by the mind of a single showrunner, Vince Gilligan. That’s not to say that he isn’t helped by his writing staff or Cranston’s ridiculous acting ability, but clearly Breaking Bad is Vince Gilligan’s Breaking Bad.

We’ve spoken about the idea of authorship in class before but what happens when authorship changes? It’s hard to say that Breaking Bad would be the same without Gilligan or that Harry Potter would be the same without Rowling, simple enough the worlds that these two authors created practically have their names branded on them. I’ve spoken of community before but if you aren’t aware, before the beginning of the fourth season, Sony decided to fire the showrunner, the author, of Community Dan Harmon. As much as the ABQ was perhaps branded by Gilligan, that world was still formed by the actors and cinematographers under supervision of Gilligan. With Harmon as a TV auteur, the world of Greendale LITERALLY lived and breathed as Dan Harmon did because he had his hands in almost every single aspect of the show. It’s not hard to fathom why almost every TV critic keeps mentioning that the season just feels “different” so far.

It’s almost amazing to see how much the author (showrunner) has become entrenched as not just a footnote but a force to be reckoned with, with the noisy (at least on the blogosphere) news of Dan Harmon’s exit, Matt Weiner’s (creator of Mad Men) battle for control and Frank Darabont’s (creator of The Walking Dead) departure when 20 or 30 years ago, MASH changed showrunners and almost no one knew, besides people who recognized the change in “feel” of the show. And in the literature world, from my own experience, I witnessed the transfer of power over the world of Randland (Wheel of Time series) after the passing of Robert Jordan. Each one of these authors brought about their own signature to their work and so it’s no surprise when people recognized the difference in the work.

So while Vince Gilligan hasn’t exactly crafted the most knowledge providing of shows, the way he has crafted the characters and the interactions between the characters are some of the things that make me think that TV has made me smarter. And while the show could possibly still function with another man in his shoes, the ABQ would not be the same without Vince Gilligan.
